The Unfolding Mystery
Chapter 10: The Three Orbs
Patrick was almost to the elevator when he stopped and turned around.
"Do you even know what it is that you have?"
Alex turned his sword over and unlocked one of the black grips, revealing a small compartment. He reached into the opening and pulled out a small round orb. the Orb had seven gray arches around it, and the yellow middle almost looked like it was flashing. In the center of the yellow flash was a character symbolizing light.
"I have an idea of what it is. It is called the Light Orb, and it is a source of great power," Alex gave his vague, very obvious observations of the small sphere. Patrick couldn’t help snickering.
"Do you know anything more?" Patrick made sure Alex had his observations out of the way first.
"No, that’s all my father knew before he... passed away," Alex’s voice got quieter as he said this, a sad, distant look growing across his face.
Patrick was silent for a moment, respecting the memory of Alex's father.
"Well, I guess I will help fill in some of the gaps he left in the explanation, though he summed up the major part of it," Patrick said as he organized what he was going to explain. He didn’t want Alex to hate him, but he didn’t want to be sympathetic. "You will have to excuse some of the gaps that I leave as well. There is nobody around that knows everything about the Orbs, and if there is someone, they are long forgotten. Now, where will I begin? the Orbs are some of the most complicated things on earth, but I know more than most people do, so I will try to explain. Well, to start off, there are three Orbs. Each of them has a different source of power. Now, realize, even though they have a certain, source of power, that doesn’t control their entire power. the Orb you carry is of course the Light Orb. That Orb’s source is everything good, such as righteous fury, or sacrifice for those that are loved ones. It’s very powerful, but it has weakened as of late. You have to consider that yes, it is the whole planet, even the universe that supplies the power, but there is so much more evil in the world than there is good."
"So you’re saying that my Orb is the weakest because of all the evil in the world," Alex seemed to be catching on, but only to a little bit. He looked at the Orb in his hand, seeing something new about it.
"Well, as of right now, it is, but you can help change that. If you can change Andorg, maybe even the whole island toward the light there is no telling what endless power it will have. Now I haven’t finished. This affects the Orb, yes, but like I said, only a little, because it is still extremely powerful, even if there is less of its source. See, it also depends on how determined the user is. This can increase the Orbs strength a thousand fold," Patrick made sure Alex understood that the power he possessed was not limited to how noble people were. Alex looked at Patrick, obviously understanding a little better.
"Now, let’s move on a little. The other Orb is the Dark Orb. This Orb is the most dangerous by far. The Dark Orb is the opposite of the Light Orb in almost every way. The Dark Orb, unlike the Light Orb, is evil beyond anything you’ve ever seen or known. Its source is greed, murder, revenge, hungering for power, and anything else that is considered evil, and what better place for it to be than Andorg," Patrick was continuing quickly, making sure Alex was catching everything.
"So, it is still in Andorg. I thought it was there, but had gone a while ago," Alex was quiet as he said this, not thinking it was important.
"Oh yes, it still very much in Andorg. But I must ask, how did you know it was in Andorg at all?" Patrick didn’t know Alex had any other knowledge of the Orbs, much less any about the Dark Orb.
"I guess you could say I have had a run in with it before, but it wasn’t anything serious," Alex decided it was better to just keep his mouth shut. He seemed to be sidetracking Patrick, and really, he was more interested in learning more about the power he possessed.
"Well, I’ll just act like I didn’t hear that and go on. Now, the Dark Orb is also very similar to the Light Orb in many ways too. Like the Light Orb, the Dark Orb still has an unbelievable amount of power, and the fact that all the evil that is coming from Andorg isn’t helping us any. Now, there is also one extremely important thing. The Dark Orb is known for its ability to corrupt and even light has a hard time standing up to the intensity of it. So, if you were to ever encounter it again, be extremely cautious," Patrick looked very serious when he said this. He knew that this force was nothing to be underestimated.
"Finally there is the Universal Orb. It is the one that I own and is by far the most powerful of the Orbs. Now if you thought the Light and Dark Orbs were hard to understand, you probably can’t even begin to fathom the Universal Orb. Its source is both light actions and dark ones, because it is half light and dark. It is basically what balances out the two. This Orb is also the most stable of the Orbs, but I will get to that in a moment. See, the Universal Orb draws from everything and then it is backed by how intensely I use it, because I have learned to put myself in full control when fighting, but unlike the Orb, I fight for good entirely, not for evil. That’s what makes the Universal Orb so hard to use. It requires some of the most intense training you could possibly imagine, because, if I don’t use it properly and use enough control, it will kill its user," Patrick let that sink in, letting Alex know that he was dealing with something more powerful than can be imagined. Alex glanced over at Patrick’s blade again, seeing the Orb in his swords hand guard. It shimmered slightly golden in the moon light.
"Now comes the hardest part to explain and where the hole comes in. I have only heard of this from my father that heard it from his. Each Orb has something called a pulsation. Yes, they only happen very rarely, but that does not dismiss the fact that they do happen. I have no idea what causes them, whether it is the Orb’s way of relieving pressure, or whether it is simply a lack of control, but I know the pulsations are dangerous to everyone, whether it be the user or not." Patrick seemed to be struggling to pull more information from his memory, but didn’t seem to be able to find anything else.
"So, is that the Orbs in a nutshell?" Alex asked.
"No, they have so many other hidden secrets that my forefathers didn’t even know. the Orbs have so much more to them than just that. There is so much that I still have yet to even begin to fathom, much less think about. Like, why do the Orbs choose certain users over others, why is it easier for me to use the Universal Orb than it was for my father? Why is it that you have come across the Light Orb and become so able to use it? Where did they come from? Where will they go at the end of time? There is so much to answer and not much to go on to get the answers." Patrick began to stare at the moon again, seeming very suddenly interested in it.
"Do you think that you will always be able to answer everything? There are many questions that simply don’t have answers. If there is no answer, then why do we still search for it?" Alex looked at the moon as well, sitting down slowly as he began to take interest in how clear the sky was compared to what it was like in Andorg.
"Because we hope, even though we know there isn’t one, and that shows clearly our ignorance to what simply is." Patrick seemed to be reading this from somewhere, as if he had heard it somewhere before.
"I hope that there is an answer, because it may be the key to becoming more knowledgeable of the Orbs." Alex certainly knew that he wanted to learn more about them.
"Well, I guess I’m going to hit the sack. If you want to share an elevator, I would be more than happy to make room," Patrick said, obviously back to his regular self, even though Alex really didn’t know what his regular self was supposed to be like.
"Uh, I guess if you insist on it, I could share one," Alex said as he turned to walk to the elevator. Alex could see already that T3GM was not going to be as simple as he thought it would be. It wouldn’t even come close.
